AKMTB Endura Series 1/3 – Woodhill, 15-September-2013

Auckland MTB Club hosted the first of the Endura series races at Woodhill this Sunday.

The course was a crunching 11km that started below the Uplands Trail and rather predictably went straight up it for the start.  At the top riders headed in to Bike parks trail to head over the hill and down the other side.  Heading toward Slippery’s Delight Trail which wound its way round and round and up and down with a log across the trail on the first lap which inexplicably moved by the second.   image002When riders finally got to the end of Slippery’s they were directed into the End trail, a fast, fun and mostly downhill trail that lead back to the playground below uplands.  The course took the riders back to the race village in the uplands trail before turning away and crossing the road to join the Link Trail up to the water tank corner then a really fun downhill through Big Mamas Trail to finally arrive back at the start village.  Overall lap distance was said to be about 11km with Junior riders all having to complete two full laps.  Age categories only went down to U17 so the U15 riders were going to have a tough job on their hands.

Race start was a crowded affair with not much room to manoeuvre as riders entered the uplands trail.  Once into the trails all should have been fine.  The weather was good having rained the day before so the sand was nice and firm and the trails were running well – what could possibly go wrong.  The answer to that is obvious given it was a race!  First casualty was coach Sophiemarie Bethel spotted walking along Slippery’s Delight with a broken derailleur, just the first of many.

As the riders streamed through the event village to complete their first half-lap the field had spread out a little and riders were settling into their rhythm.  A quick grind up Link to the top of the hill before turning back and flying down Big Mamas Tail showed many of the Jafakids at the head of the field.

Riders were well supported both by the ground crew at the event village and also by circulating supporters in the forms of Isaac Schuurman, and Charlotte Rayner both still riding  and supporting even if not able to race on the day.

Into the second lap and a fall put Kerran Tetley out while Alex Beavan was sadly spotted walking in as well with  a broken derailleur cable after a strong start.  Most riders will have had some incident or other during the race and as the leaders came in to finish their second and final lap it was with some relief that they looked on at some of the elder riders still with another lap to go – possibly not at all jealous that their race was run.

A quick sausage from the Jafakids Barbeque seemed to round off a satisfying ride through some of the best of the current Woodhill trail network.  The prize-giving was well supported by the Jafakids with all manner of goodies handed out and gratefully accepted.

Round 2 of the Endura series will be at Hunua so we’ll look forward to a similarly strong turnout then.
