Wanted: Mtbers to help organise mtb stuff

1513222_10151932420379531_2061414803_nHey there, Sarah here! While I was out racing, cursing myself for putting my body through that much pain, and then subsequently drinking almost a whole litre of chocolate milk which meant I then needed to stop every hour on my way back to Auckland, I got nominated as MTB Delegate for 2014 at the DOC AGM. Thanks guys! But I need help…

Are you keen to put in a wee bit of time to help organise something that you love that you want to share with others? I’m looking for people to form the mtb subcommittee for this year and pick up responsibilities like the ones below, or start something new 🙂

– Organise the wed night mtb social ride (roster and weekly updates plus the mid winter ride and Christmas ride)

– Organise our coaching calender for the year plus work with the coaches to decide the focus and location of each session, plus promo etc… (maybe a few people to do this)

– Organise group away rides, day rides or overnight trips etc.. (Parahaki Mtb Club is keen to do an interclub ride this year)

– Work with Clint to organise the DOC-supported races

– Work with Jafakids to keep up to date with what they are doing and how we can share resources or events…

Email me at mtb@deptofcycling.com or text/call 021 278 9726. We normally meet on the first Monday of every month, cutting down to bi-monthly during winter when things are quieter.

Volunteers Wanted to Help Organise “King & Queen of the Cog 2014”

The inaugural “King and Queen of the Cog 2014” event is coming up soon in just two months time on the 6th (road) & 8th (mtb) of March. Are you keen to help get this event off the ground? Inparticular we are looking for people to help coordinate the following:

– Course (mtb) – people to set the mtb course(s) at Riverhead Forest, get maps done, organise tape/signs, course set up, marshalls etc…

– Promo & sponsorship – people to hunt out spot prizes, help promote the event

– Registration – someone to look after registrations/finances, prior to and on the day of the event.

– Timing – look after timing/placings at the event.

– Misc – people to organise trophies, first aiders, event set up etc…

Please email Sarah at mtb@deptofcycling.com asap or text/call on 021 278 9726.

2014 Racing Update

Auckland Secondary Schools Mountain Bike Series

(see also: Jafakids Calendar)

After many years of organising a great Auckland Secondary Schools Mountain Bike Series with help from ASB College Sport, Sadie Parker, Hira Wynyard and Rod Haag have handed over the reins.

The event needed to be led by a teacher and Jon Hasler from Auckland Grammar has kindly stepped up to be the main organiser. Lara Craggs (Auckland Grammar parent and Jafakids committee member) has been involved in the organisation with Jon as well as having some  input from Blair Woodhead (Coach for MacLeans College) and our Jafakids Chairman Neil Welsford.

The 3 races from the Auckland Secondary School series have been combined with the 4 race Auckland Grammar Winter Series Jon Hasler has run for 10 years!  For 2014 the new combined series will consist of 5 races.

It was stressed to us that we must avoid the dates for the Road Time Trials.

In selecting the dates for the Mountain Bike Series, we were also careful to avoid the dates of the N Duro Winter Series, the Moonride and Taupo Thriller.  This actually left very few dates available to us.

Jon Hasler has worked tirelessly to try and organise a NZ Secondary Schools Event in Auckland.  At this stage, it is looking like the Otago Mountain Bike Club will be organising the NZSS National Champs event for 2014 in the October school holidays next year.  Jon Hasler has been passionate about having an event in the North Island to give all the up and coming mountain bike school riders and racers a go.  This event has been sanctioned by NZSSSC, MTBNZ, BikeNZ, NZSCA and ASB College Sport.  The idea is that the North Island Secondary Schools Mountain Bike Champs will become an annual event. It is hoped that the North Island (Auckland) will host the National Champs in 2015. Thereafter – taking turns with the South Island.

The NISS event will be run in Hunua on the weekend of 22/23 March.  More details will follow on this, but we will be needing the support of Jafakids and all other interested parties and sponsors to make a success of this “Auckland” North Island Secondary Schools Event.  The results from the cross country race at this event will also be included as part of the Auckland Secondary Schools series.  It will form race 1 of the 5 race series.  This event is already on the website for the Auckland School Sports Co-ordinators to see.

All Jafakids riders should be encouraged to take part in the Auckland Secondary Schools Series.  The venues will be confirmed later and we will be seeking the support of Jafakids and Schools/parents to volunteer help at these events:

Race 1   NISS Event Hunua 22/23 March
Race 2 Sunday 1 June (Queen’s Birthday weekend)
Race 3 Sunday 15 June
Race 4 Sunday 17 August
Race 5 Sunday 31 August

To be in contention to win the series, you need to take part in 4 of the 5 races.

  • 3 August

Any queries, offers of help, sponsorship, please don’t hesitate to ask!

AKMTB Endura Series 1/3 – Woodhill, 15-September-2013

Auckland MTB Club hosted the first of the Endura series races at Woodhill this Sunday.

The course was a crunching 11km that started below the Uplands Trail and rather predictably went straight up it for the start.  At the top riders headed in to Bike parks trail to head over the hill and down the other side.  Heading toward Slippery’s Delight Trail which wound its way round and round and up and down with a log across the trail on the first lap which inexplicably moved by the second.   [Read more…]

Race Report: Day Night Thriller, 2013

The Thriller this year looked like a bit of a teaser.  Arriving at the venue, the event village looked strangely small compared with previous years.  We wondered why there were not so many entrants this year.  Then we found out that the course had been drastically shortened and now wouldn’t go anywhere near the forestry blocks with the fantastic views over the Waikato River.  This apparently also meant that there were no significant hills.  We all started to worry –  just a bit – that this might have been a mistake!  Still we were all there and ready to race so there was really only one thing that we could do.
