The Dual

After two years of planning and preparations on Saturday March 28th nearly 700 mountain bikers and over 800 marathon runners took part in the Dual, a spectacular race on Rangitoto and Motutapu islands.  The event of such scale and ligistical complexity would not be possible without the combined effort of Total Sport, Department of Conservation, Motutapu Restoration Trust, many Sponsors and army of Volunteers. Waitakere riders did very well, with Jamie Till placing 3rd in mens open, Sadie Parker 1st in womens open, Kiri Kotara 3rd in womens open, Reuben Horn 1st in juniors, and many other community members finishing high in ranks.  AvantiPlus Waitakere team provided much needed mechanical and logistical support before and during the event, fixing punctures, doing speedy repairs, and even offering emergency bikes for those whose machines could not be fixed on the spot.

It was great to see so many familiar faces enjoying this awesome event. See you again in 2010!

Annual Cycle Monitoring counts next week

This email is to advise you that the third annual regional cycle monitoring count will be taking place next week on Tuesday 10th, Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th (with rain postponement days  the week after-17th, 18th, 19th . If you see people taking a greater-than-usual interest in you cycling, they are likely counting you!

Waitakere counts will take place on Tuesday 10th (or Tuesday 17th if wet on the 10th). We have 14 site locations in Waitakere.  The data is used by councils for funding applications and planning and also by ARTA, the ARC and by the NZ Transport Agency. You may also be interested to know that here in Waitakere we recorded a 15% increase in cycle movements between the 2006 and 2007 counts. I am very hopeful that we will see another increase this year. Fingers crossed for conducive cycling weather!

The cycle counts are conducted manually by Gravitas Research. Give the surveyors a wave if you see them.

Safe and happy cycling.
