enforcement official, who appears to be a secret service agent, and another officer heard discussing the evidence the shooter was believed to be left behind. >> our sniper seen him walking away from that, i believe. >> reporter: this image clearly visible on the phone held by the local officer wearing the helmet cam. the video comes among mounting scrutiny aimed at the secret service and how it handled the assassination attempt, both before and after. the alleged lack of transparency costing the head of the secret service her job. kim cheatle, after vowing to stay, telling her work force she no longer wanted to be, quote, a distraction. now multiple sources telling abc news that the secret service has asked the trump campaign to consider not holding outdoor rallies in the wake of the assassination attempt and the heightened threat environment. the fbi director will be on capitol hill later this morning where he will face questions about what took place. he's likely to provide an update

on what he is calling an extremely dangerous threat environment. >> robin: thank you, pierre. now the latest on the race for the white house. vice president harris who is now the presumptive nominee. let's go to our chief white house correspondent mary bruce for details. good morning to you, mary. >> reporter: good morning, robin. i can tell you the energy in that room was palpable. the crowd was fired up and energized. this is the largest crowd the democrats have seen in this race so far. from the moment harris stepped onto that stage, it was clear that this is a whole new race. this morning kamala harris is hitting the ground running. her first campaign rally in battleground wisconsin, electrifying a crowd of 3,000 supporter. >> we have doors to knock on. we have phone calls to make. we have voters to register. we have an election to win! >> reporter: harris the presumptive nominee. she argued as the former

attorney general of california, she's qualified to prosecute the case against him. >> i took on perpetrators of all kinds. predators who abused women fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. hear me when i say i know donald trump's type. >> reporter: she's wasting no time getting at the issues that will determine this race. >> we, who believe in reproductive freedoms will stop donald trump's extreme abortion bans because we trust women to

make decisions about their own bodies and not have their government tell them what to do. >> reporter: but also leaning into the economic issues at the top of mind for so many voters. >> america has tried these failed economic policies before, but we are not going back. >> reporter: this morning the first poll since biden withdrew showing harris has a slight lead over trump, a lead that doubles if robert f kennedy jr. is in the mix. this race will come down to a handful of battleground states where trump has been leading for weeks. that's where harris' pick for a running mate could come into play. sources tell abc news vetting has already begun. for now at least four names on the list. josh shapiro, popular governor

of must win pennsylvania. senator mark kelly of critical arizona. an astronaut and husband of former congress woman gabby give ford. alex beshear and governor roy cooper, elected twice in north carolina, a state democrats have been investing in heavily, hoping to flip blue. new a senior administration official tells us that right now kelly and shapiro are the leading candidates but, of course, this list could change in the coming weeks. harris doesn't just have the ability to focus on the race. she now has to balance it with these official duties. today that includes a speech in indiana and tomorrow a meeting with benjamin netanyahu in washington. robin? >> robin: thanks to you. president biden set to address the nation tonight for the first time since dropping out of the race. selina wang has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this will be a historic moment when president biden addresses the nation tonight from the oval office. for the first time, he'll explain why he decided to drop out of this race and he'll also

focus on what lies ahead and what he wants to do for the rest of his term. biden finally returned to the white house yesterday after isolating with covid in delaware for more than five days. his doctor says that he no longer has symptoms and has tested negative for covid. a source close to the president tells me that he started working on that speech while he was still isolating, then huddled with his speech writers back at the white house. biden still has six months left of his presidency and he says he's determined to do everything he can to accomplish his goals, both at home and abroad. that includes lowering costs for americans and trying to end this war in gaza. the president is still planning to meet with israel's prime minister netanyahu at the white house tomorrow. but now biden also has a new goal, and that is to ensure vice president kamala harris succeeds him in the oval office. i'm told tomorrow night to expect president biden to be speaking from his heart. robin? >> robin: all right, thank you. we're going to have live coverage of president biden's

speech tonight with david muir and the powerhouse political team. that's 8 p.m. eastern on abc. george? >> george: now donald trump stepping up at tax on kamala harris as he hits the campaign trail for the first time since biden dropped out of the race. rachel scott is covering the campaign. >> reporter: george, good morning. just a few hours former president trump heads to north carolina to hold his first rally since president biden dropped out of the race. the former president has been clearly frustrated that, in his words, he has to started all over again with a new rival. now vice president kamala harris. he has spent days attacking president biden even though he dropped out of the race. now he is starting to switch gears going after the vice president on everything from administration's handling of immigration and the border, also her failed bid for white house in 2020. on a press call with reporters, trump did make one thing very clear though. he does want to debate harris before the november election saying candidates have an obligation to get up on that debate stage. there will be one notable change

to his rally today in north carolina that will be different from the rally in butler, pennsylvania. this rally will be held indoors. the former president and his campaign clearly heeding warnings from the secret service about holding those outdoor rallies that you just heard from pierre. george? >> george: thanks. israeli prime minister netanyahu will meet with vice president harris, president biden and former president trump. capitol is bracing for protests ahead of netanyahu's speech. chief national correspondent matt gutman is on the scene in washington. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, george. ahead of that address, this part of the capital is on lockdown. there are snow plows here. just on the other side you might be able to see the tens of thousand of protesters expected here. there are fleets of police, even tow trucks. they will be backed by thousands of officers from the capitol police to the nypd. now, this is expected to be the single largest protest event in washington since january 6th. we got a sliver of what might be in store when hundreds of people

demanded that the u.s. stop arming israel. there were dozens of arrests made. this will be the fourth time netanyahu addresses congress, more than anybody in history. notably, there are members of congress who are saying they are going to boycott the event, and netanyahu facing a lot of backlash back home for dragging his feet from entering a cease fire and hostage release that would end that devastating conflict in gaza. notably absent from today's address will be vice president harris. she said she has another commitment, but she will meet netanyahu later this week, as will president biden. and netanyahu set to travel down to mar-a-lago to meet with former president trump attend of the week. whit? >> whit: matt gutman, thank you. we turn to the night mare delays at delta. since friday more than 10,000 flights have been cancelled on all airlines, and 54,000 more delayed.

faith abubey is at the delta hub in hartsfield jackson, atlanta. delta has a new promise for customers. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, whit. six days since that global tech outage, delta says the impact is diminishing. they said cancellations are going down about 50% every single day. considering they cancelled more than 500 flights yesterday, that means potentially another day of travel headaches for customers. this morning chaos and growing passenger outrage as delta airlines struggles to recover from that global i.t. outage. the major flight disruptions now in their sixth day, leaving lots of passengers stranded. >> this is our fourth cancellation. >> i wish we had stayed home. >> reporter: the u.s. department of transportation saying since friday, delta has cancelled more than 6,000 flights. the airline now the subject of a federal investigation.

>> we estimate more than 500,000 passengers have been impacted by this. there is something unique to delta that requires specific attention. >> reporter: in a company memo, delta saying they are seeing day over day progress and, quote, teams are working around the clock to reposition planes and people to where they need to be so we can return to normal operations by the end of the week. rochelle okufu saying delta cancelled her and her daughter's flight to london. the airline booking them with a layover of more than 340 hours. >> in what world do i have a two week layover? >> reporter: this morning delta issuing a new statement saying in part, please accept our sincere apologies for the disruptions to your recent travel plans caused by vendor technology outage affecting airlines and companies worldwide. and delta, robin, this morning, this is the best ticketing counter has looked at delta. delta is offering to issue 10,000 bonus miles to affected customers and also plans to

reimburse customers for reasonable expenses. robin? >> robin: they just want to get home or wherever they're going. all right, faith. thanks to you. now a powerful eruption caught on camera at yellowstone national park that sent debris raining down on visitors. mola lenghi has the story. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, robin. yeah, that eruption proving spectacular and terrifying all at the same time. scientists at yellowstone national park telling us this was a random event happening without warning. >> back, back, back! >> reporter: screams of terror, as this guyser in yellowstone national park exploded without warning tuesday. >> boulders, rocks falling all over us. >> reporter: watch as a plume of black smoke quickly permeates the air. people running for cover. >> we kind of went into fight or flight mode. we grabbed our kids, started running. just instinctively trying to get

as far as we can from the explosion. holy cow! >> reporter: park officials say no one was injured, but the boardwalk completely destroyed. some seen stepping over mud and rocks. >> i'm shaking. >> reporter: the explosion took place at the biscuit thermal area two miles north of the old faithful guyser, which erupts every 90 minutes. >> once the explosion was over and i saw the damage, then i was really scared. >> reporter: experts say hydro thermal explosions occur when water under ground rapidly changes from liquid to steam. the transition expanding the surface resulting in a violent eruption a phenomenon common in yellowstone. >> what happened is that an unusual event where a lot of pressure built in. with so much pressure it forced its way out and erupted then carried a bunch of rock and dust up in the air with it. >> reporter: parts of yellowstone's biscuit basin will

caught on camera here. we talk to the people on that boat when it hit. that's coming up. >> robin: right now, whit, more on the update, we should say, on the investigation into the fatal police shooting of sonya massey. records show the deputy charged in her death worked for six agencies in four years. morgan norwood is tracking the latest for us. good morning to you, morgan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. that video horrific. the deputy we saw fire three fatal shots is behind bars, calls now for the sheriff to be held accountable. we're learning shawn grayson went from job to job. six agency, four years. this morning sonya massey's family said that was the first red flag. after seeing the horrific video of former illinois deputy shawn grayson killing miss massey. >> shots fired! >> reporter: sonya massey's father shattered, now calling the sheriff to be held accountable. >> i'm very clear and i'm very eloquent. he needs to resign.

>> reporter: grayson now charged with murdering the mother of two after she called 911 to report a prowler. massey's son malachi heart broken and in disbelief. >> she was just a ball of energy. she can talk to anybody. >> reporter: ben crump questioning grayson's employment history. six different police jobs in the past four years including three different departments in 2021 alone. >> we need to find out what the sheriff's department knew when they hired him. >> reporter: grayson's attorney did decline to comment. he is being held without bond. the doj said it is aware and will continue to track this case, robin. >> robin: as we will as well. >> george: we have an abc news exclusive. former ballerina ashley benfield is son trial, accused of killing her estranged husband. she's claiming self-defense. eva pilgrim here with the story. >> this case has gotten so much attention. supporters marching even before the trial began, trying to raise awareness, saying she is the victim of domestic violence. ashley benefield is facing a

possible life sentence for killing the man she claims was abusing her. ♪ they were the ballerina and businessman behind the american national ballet. a charleston based company ashley benefield and her husband doug launched in 2017. but that ballet company is dead and so is doug. and now benefield taking center stage at what has been dubbed the black swan murder trial. the 32-year-old accused of fatally shooting doug in the fall of 2020. >> black swan has a catchy ring and it sensationalizes my life and my situation. it's sad to me that people who don't even know me have this idea of a monster when they think of me. >> reporter: benefield appearing in a florida courtroom tuesday

as opening arguments for her murder trial began. prosecutors claiming the couple was in a tense custody battle over their daughter emerson. >> this was a custody battle that this mother was going to win at all costs. and the cost was the life of doug benefield, and that is murder. >> reporter: but benefield's attorney said she was trapped in an abusive relationship with a man who wasn't who he claimed to be. >> doug benefield was a manipulative, cunning and abusive man who insisted, absolutely insisted, on control. >> reporter: benefield said she was introduced to doug in 2016 and instantly connected with the recently widowed father, despite their 30-year age difference. after a whirlwind 13-day romance, the couple wed and soon after launched the american national ballet. but the company failed and so did their marriage. according to court documents, benefield feared her husband,

who she claims became agitated and attacked her in her florida home. benefield saying she shot him multiple times in self-defense. benefield choking back tears as jurors heard her neighbor's 911 call. >> her estranged husband attacked her and she said she shot him. >> if it was shelf defense, why did she shoot multiple times? >> reporter: doug's adult daughter iva telling abc news that he was a good father and benefield wanted him dead. >> i just don't understand how ashley twisted it so much in her own head that she had to take his life away. >> reporter: but ashley benefield said she's a victim of domestic violence, sitting down for an exclusive interview with 20/20 co-anchor deborah roberts ahead of her trial. >> you haven't spoken out before. why did you decide to talk now? >> i feel like doing it for other people, because i know i'm not alone in this. there are women all over the

this morning astounding video of a boat walloped by a whale in the waters of portssmith, new hampshire. watch the whale breaching the surface and falling directly on the boat. >> i look back. by the time i see at this time whale's head is already landing on the engine. >> reporter: greg and rilen were on board. >> i heard the water kind of wrestle a little bit. then i heard a breach and the mouth open. i was like, whoa! >> reporter: ryland seen jumping off the side as the boat starts to roll. they say those few seconds felt like slow motion. >> you have to remember all this is happening from the whale hitting the boat to us being in the water is four seconds. it seemed like it was a lot longer. >> mayday, mayday, their boat was hit by the whale. capsized. >> reporter: brothers wyatt and colin yager were the ones who filmed this incredible moment and immediately rushed in to help. >> it was kind of a second of

like, oh, man, what just happened? it was complete shock. and then it was immediately just like, drop everything and get those guys out of the water. all the other boats around us did the same thing. >> reporter: the two fishermen safely climbing aboard the yager's vessel. >> they were happy to be safe and out of the water. >> reporter: experts say this kind of behavior from the whale isn't unusual. >> looks like it was actively feeding in a lunging behavior. they do accelerate as they're heading towards the surface of the water. and they break the surface of the water. i'm sure it was probably just as shocked as the people on the boated were. >> reporter: greg and ryland are helpful for the help from their fellow fishermen. >> i think we were really lucky today. it could have ended much worse. unfortunately, the boat took the brunt of it but nobody was hurt. >> experts say if you are out boating near a whale, you're supposed to give it 100 yards of space. they did note, the fishermen,

others. >> reporter: according to the cdc about 41% of women and 26% of men report experiencing sexual violence, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner, with more than 61 million women and 53 million men enduring psychological aggression. >> alexis smith coming forward, that's extremely powerful because it gives people this idea that if she could do it -- first of all, if she could suffer abuse, certainly, i could suffer abuse. secondly, if she's strong enough to step forward and call out this person, i could probably do the same. >> reporter: alexis, using her platform, encouraging others to find support. >> to everyone watching that has experienced domestic violence, you are strong. this is not your fault. and you have the ability to take the lead. >> so true. smith will compete on her platform in january's miss america pageant. certainly, her story is resonating with so many women because it shows domestic abuse doesn't discriminate.

i have people who put dry cleaner bags over things so nobody knows it's something new. >> reporter: she even does it herself sometimes, despite buying things with her own money. >> i'll just sort of bring it in the house, put it somewhere in a closet, come back down at night, grab it. >> rebecca: 64% of those living with a significant other hid purchases from their partners in the last year. the top reason? avoiding judgement or criticism, and impulse buying guilt. >> there is a lot of guilt and shame and embarrassment about how you're spending because maybe it doesn't align with your partner's values, your partner's habits. so rather than have a conversation about it, they feel the need to be secretive about it, to hide it. >> reporter: experts say financial secrets can snowball. >> you become comfortable hiding these purchase. now you're going to be comfortable hiding maybe bigger purchases or bigger financial issue. >> rebecca: to start the conversation, first get

transparent about costs. >> sometimes it's just educating your partner on what things cost in the areas that you are interested in spending. >> rebecca: then create spending buckets. >> it would benefit everyone in the relationship to have their own accounts for their own budgets for discretionary spending on a monthly basis. >> rebecca: every couple is different. for ellen, they have an unspoken agreement. >> we've been together half of our lives so at this point he's like, i don't even want to know. he'll say to me, you look great, period. >> rebecca: sound familiar? maybe just a little bit. it is not just women, by the way, who are doing this. men are, too. so how do you stop that cycle? first you got to remove those triggers. stop or put limits on your scrolling so you don't fall prey to that fomo that need to buy instinct. create a blow it budget with your partner. that is money you agree can be spent guilt-free. finally, remember this is deeply

still and it's remembered with some fond thoughts is like -- it was fun to go back down memory lane with him. i hadn't seen andrew in maybe 25 years at least. >> lara: that's what he that's surprising. >> i know. >> lara: i think in our heads we think you're all in touch. >> no. i would love another excuse to be together. >> lara: well, you can do it, buddy. >> robin: we are back just two days until the opening ceremonies of the summer olympics in paris. our gma olympic dynamic duo, lara and james longman, tried out one of the sports making its debut. we teased people enough. you gotta deliver. >> lara: done. james has already made his way to paris. i'm leaving right after the show today. but before i go, we wanted to share this with you. there are two new sports in olympics. break dancing and something

called kayak cross. anything with a kayak says it couldn't be too hard. i thought. but this is really a tremendously difficult sport. we had a gold medal coach for ourselves. turned out to be quite the terrifying ride. take a look. imagine being dropped off a 20 foot ramp while sitting in a kayak. then racing through raging rapids with three competitors, all allowed to push and shove you with your paddles. >> look at that. >> i'm gonna knock you down. >> lara: welcome to kayak cross. to see if we could make it in this heart stopping sport we traveled about an hour outside london to the home of great britain's team training facility. and who better to teach us a thing or two than joe clarke, a 2016 olympic gold medallist. he's this year's reigning world champion in kayak cross which means he is the front runner for

gold at this year's olympics. any advice for us as we embark on our olympics career? >> advice? try and stay alive, first and foremost. >> lara: thank you. >> just enjoy it. perfect day for it. >> james: what are the americans like? are they in this? >> not so much. they used to be amazing. >> james: when you are on the canoe slolom to come back and get around one of those posts. >> lara: any thoughts on who is going to win? how dare you! >> because i'm british. >> james: we'll be backing you, the english speaker who is a gold medal contender. >> lara: let's go. before we can compete, we must first be properly trained on land. if we could just add water, we would be so ready.

>> james: do we look utterly insane? >> lara: you're going down, longman! going down. then out to the water for a swim test. let the training begin. first stop they need to make sure if we fall out of our kayak, or hot dog as they're called, that we know how to survive. swim test success. now joe needs to see if we can paddle our way out of trouble. >> you're paddling against each other. team work makes the dream work. >> lara: why are we going in a circle? this isn't good. i feel we're ready for the rapids. >> i think we're going to hit the wall. >> lara: lastly, a lesson in capsizing, not that we needed help with that one.

>> james: one, two, three. okay. >> lara: where's the paddle? we lost the paddle. >> james: tremendous amount of water in this boat. >> lara: we're ready for kayak cross. at last, the moment of truth. will the united states or team gb bring home the gold? ♪ >> james: oh, shoot! oh, oh. >> lara: bye, sucker! usa! usa! uh-oh. i spoke too soon. that was pretty great.

they're making money, trying to take on the bridge. lot of fun. >> whit: you've had so many different roles in television. what surprised you most about this experience as a game show host? >> i think it's just that. we have team after team coming on the show. every team that comes on, i'm all in. like, at the end of it we're like, we got to go for drinks. let's hang out. they're only there for about 30, 40 minutes at a time. i'm just invested. i'm cheering and rooting for them. i love it. >> lara: that's the word for you i think is authentic. we love when you are here on gma. you did awesome work for us. i loved working with you. you said one of your favorite memories -- we were asking you what you missed, what you remember most. you said it was your kids. >> i flash back, i think it was around summer of 2008.
